Scope and Contents Field notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael. The marjority of the notebook relates to material collected in Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire but there are a number of loose leaves at the end which contain an account of a journey from Uibhist/Uist through An t-Eilean Sgitheanach/Isle of Skye, during which time his wife, Mary is in Edinburgh and is pregnant. Fragment of a story collected from Donald MacColl [foxhunter, Glencreran, Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire] that the ferryman [Archibald MacInnes] at Fasnacloich, Glencreran [Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire] had the second sight, and asked Cailen Glinn-Iur [Cailean Ghlinn Iubhair or Cailean Uaine/Colin Campbell of Glenure] [not to cross over on the day he was murdered into Appin].

Prophecy relating to a polished stone made by Guala Chrosda [Colla Chrosda]. The stone is described as being '9 x 1 1/2 [inches] deep' and polished on both sides and the prophecy is that 'No one will get the ulla till nighean dugh a Chlann ic niamhain'.

Prophecy verse by Guala Crosda beginning 'Biodh na h-eich mhaide, Len sriannan cainbe tin is taighe' with a note explaining that the prophecy related to 'Na Sasanaich' [the English] and 'na h-eich mhaide' being 'vessels'. Also notes that Guala Crosda would speak to himself but people would listen to him. Some of the pencil marks in this item are very faint.

Scope and Contents Story entitled 'Eachdraidh Chlann Uisne' collected from Iain MacNeill [John MacNeil], aged 83, pauper, Buailenambodach, Barraidh [Buaile nam Bodach, Barraigh/Isle of Barra] and written down by Carmichael on Liosmore [Lios Mòr] on 16 March 1867. MacNeil is noted as 'co-aois a Choirneil Ruaraidh ic Neill uacaran Bharraidh' [a contemporary of Colonel Roderick MacNeil, MacNeil of Barra]. The story tells how a seer told an old childless couple that they would have a daughter who would cause more...

Scope and Contents Story entitled 'Tomas Reibhair' ['Thomas the Rhymer'] collected from Iain MacChoinich [John MacKenzie] from 'eilean Chollach' at Carbost [Cola/Coll, Càrabost, An t-Eilean Sgitheanach/Isle of Skye]. A man was buying six horses, all of them with a golden yellow forelock and after buying the last one, his servant recognised him as Thomas the Rhymer. He asks her which eye did you recognise me with and she said it was her right eye whereupon he put his finger on her eye and she was blinded....
